Come alone space
Athens (GR)
Part of the exhibition Crystal in soil curated by Elena Stavraki
ZUCCHERO (ζάχαρη)
2019
Performance 30 minutes
I wanted to enlarge the space around the performance, trying to create a synthesis formed not by the exclusion of the superfluous but by the union of details. If it were political, it would be a utopian ‘democracy by excess’ in which the system of rules is composed by the sum of exceptions and not by the convergence to a common rule.
The performance Zucchero is composed of various installation elements in which the artist’s body constitutes one element among others. The floor of the space is covered by a multitude of small black chairs, approx. 2 cm in size, forcing the audience to pay attention, as well as causing them to reconsider their proportions. Arranged in a scattered order on the floor, the chairs gradually gather around a drawing lying on the floor. A flap of the drawing is slightly raised, the rest of the space in the room is empty. The artist’s body is wedged between two chairs, moving in the space and waiting. In a corner he prepares something to eat, waits until it is ready, eats.
The performance represents a living, changing space. Creating an installation/environment prior to the arrival of the body helps me to articulate myself in the space by thinning out until I lose the idea of centre.
